Public Art in Monticello

The Monticello Area Arts Council is pleased to be working with the Public Art League, businesses and private donors to bring public sculpture to Monticello!

On September 12, 2019 "Beneath the Surface" was installed and unveiled near the corner of State Street and Livingston Street just off the square.

There are several sculptures in and around Monticello, but it became the dream of some dedicated public art supporters to see more! Rather than creating a permanent collection through purchase, volunteers started working with the Public Art League to lease sculpture for a 2 year period.

The Public Art League (PAL), located in Champaign, focuses its efforts on installing sculptures in public spaces with the goal of creating a permanent collection in our community. Every year PAL conducts a national call to artists requesting sculpture entries. A jury panel reviews the entries and selects sculptures for potential installation. The Public Art League then conducts a fund-raising campaign to match sculpture locations with sponsors. When sufficient funds have been raised either through individual donations or through a sponsorship, the Public Art League enters a two-year lease contract with the artist. While on exhibit, artists have the opportunity to sell their work with the assistance of PAL.

After securing funds through business and private donations, Beneath the Surface was selected for placement behind the Moore Building. The Monticello Area Arts Council became involved to assist with the handling of donations and the production of possible educational materials and artist related events.

Future goals include the installation more sculpture in the green spaces around Monticello. Perhaps enough funds could be raised and MAAC could purchase a piece for permanent installation.
